If you haven't heard, there is a world wide hop shortage for 2008. Excessive rain in Europe combined with drought in Australia have caused massive crop failures and created a huge demand from other countries for American hops. Hop acreage is way down from thirty years ago with farmers switching to other crops such as apples or just selling their land for development. The bottom line is that unless a brewery already has a hop contract for the 2007 crop, they will not have hops to brew in 2008. Therefore we are faced with the inevitable decision of postponing our opening until we are able to secure a hop contract. Industry insiders have speculated that things may be equal or worse next year with recovery beginning in 2010. Nonetheless, we hope to secure a hop contract for the 2008 crop and begin brewing in 2009.
Until then we will continue to tweak our recipes and indulge in the tedious task that is quality control...someone has to do it.
